Bring Me The Horizon Changes Music Forever!

addicted Addiction avalanche bring me the horizon count your blessings drown fuck Mental Health music pray for plagues Reviews sempiternal that's the spirit

Bring Me The Horizon wrote one of the best albums of 2013. They’ve gone from angst style screamo to utter inspiration. The band started with songs ranting about ill intentions, drug abuse, and sexual perversions. But they eloquently graduated into advocates for addiction recovery (Semptiternal, 13’) and mental health (That’s The Spirit, 15’).

Before procuring their fourth album (Sempiternal), Bring Me The Horizon frontman and fan motivator, Oli Sykes, was in a world of peril. Sykes was severely addicted to the drug Ketamine. It was a huge blow for the band, reigning from the UK. But amongst it all Sykes took the stage during the APMA’s to accept awards for “Best international band” and “Best Album.”

Sykes did the unexpected during his speech at the APMAs. His actions took the band from “just known” to one of the biggest bands in the world. At such a young age, the band went on to play a sold-out Wembley arena but not before Sykes publicly admitted, “Before we wrote Sempiternal, I was a fucking drug addict. I was addicted to a drug called Ketamine.”

Sykes courage propelled the band into infamy, forever to be hailed as addiction and mental health warriors for the music scene. As so many struggle with this issue, they are spreading the message of how to truly be addicted to your passions—like music—and get off drugs from the guidance music gave them.

Sykes says he was addicted for four years, which dates back to the band’s earlier albums that had a bit of unintended (or not) angst to them. Before getting clean, Sykes admitted that the band and all of those around his wanted to “kill him” for his actions. Soon after him admitting to the addiction (surrendering) you could see the true transformation of the band begin to happen.

The transformation was apparent. Sykes claims that when he got out of rehab he didn’t want to scream anymore. This was a big turn from their original style. Sykes was passed the stages of hatred in his life. He was in true acceptance.

In an article from Alt Press Sykes states, “When I got out of rehab, I didn’t wanna fucking scream anymore; I wanted to sing it through the rooftops, and it’s all thanks to you.”

Music and the believers/fans of BMTH have led Skyes to become an icon for supporting recovery and mental health. Music is truly healing. I urge you to become addicted to the healing in music, not the drugs in the scene.

Bring Me The Horizon has graduated from songs like “Pray For Plagues” and “Fuck” to more inspirational ones. It was said at their live show at Wembley Arena the band didn’t want to play their old music; such as “Pray for Plagues.” The band states that they are not that image anymore and don’t want to send a mixed message. They weren’t a message of sadness and anger anymore.

Let’s take a look at the band's progression and maturity through addiction to recovery.

Count Your Blessings–Pray For Plagues (06′)

She starts her new diet of liquor and d!**.
Just like Hollywood, but laced in sick.
The sun goes down, and so does she.
The sun goes down, and so does she.
Sold out the love that she had, left with a cut of the throat.
Drinks all ’round on her before she strolls to the moat.
The sun goes down, and so does she.
The sun goes down, and so does she.
Oh!
Count!
Count your fucking blessings!
Come on!

Bring Me the Horizon now lives for songs like “Drown” which is an anthem for depression, “Avalanche,” and “True Friends” which they have made music videos and small movies for. Through the small movie “True Friends,” it’s shown the true perils that mental health and addiction can cause, but the lyrics are truly uplifting and healing at every turn.

Let’s take a look at the bands now motivational progression:

Sempiternal-Sleepwalking (13’)

My secrets are buried now
From my heart and my bones catch a fever
When it cuts you up this deep
It’s hard to find a way to breathe
Your eyes are swallowing me
Mirrors start to whisper
Shadows start to see
My skin’s smothering me
Help me find a way to breathe
Time stood still
The way it did before
It’s like I’m sleepwalking
Turn into another hole I got
It’s like I’m sleepwalking

That’s The Spirit-Drown (15’)

Who will fix me now, dive in when I’m down?
Save me from myself, don’t let me drown
Who will make me fine, drag me out alive?
Save me from myself, don’t let me drown
What doesn’t destroy you, leaves you broken instead
Got a hole in my soul growing deeper and deeper
And I can’t take
One more moment of this silence, the loneliness is haunting me
And the weight of the world’s getting harder to hold up

Sykes now has a couple of years clean and abstinent from drugs and alcohol and feels no need to go back to that lifestyle. He’s about a much greater cause. Now the music kings of fighting depression are true savants of this time.

The fact that they have millions waiting their call goes to show that there is true hope for the cause of mental health and addiction awareness.

Bring Me The Horizon was a band that I grew up listening to during my teenage years. Sadly enough I was addicted to drugs the same time Oli Sykes was, too. I love their earlier tunes. But as I started to get clean it seemed that their lyrics and band’s direction started to change.

I don’t listen to their old tunes much anymore, and neither do they. But, as soon as Sempiternal came out I was hooked to the music once again. I felt the healing taking place. I have listened to Sempiternal over a thousand times and can’t get enough of “That’s the Spirit,” either!

If you haven’t checked out, Bring Me The Horizon I urge you to get on doing that! It’s for all ages and all music taste. They don’t scream anymore for anyone who’s not into that. They have harmonizing guitars and the drummer is spot on. They even have a synth player leading the way in songs like “Throne” during the chorus for inspiration. Not to mention Sykes has done a stellar job leading the way for this movement with his words and changed lifestyle.

As Sykes says, “So you can throw me to the wolves, tomorrow I will come back the leader of the whole pack. Beat me black and blue, every word will shape me, every scar will build my Throne.”
