The last time I used before getting some clean time under my belt was February 27, 2009. This was one of the worst days of my life. I went to hell and never made it back. I was 19 years old and my best friend who'd been helping me get heroin had checked himself into rehab for the 7th or 8th time. At this point in my life things were looking really gloomy, not just the cores of my eyes and heart either. The FBI raided my drug dealer, although that didn’t stop me from calling his phone over and over again. I couldn’t find ANY dope. I went back to a drug dealer that I tried in early addiction, but as I arrived and knocked on the steel door they open up and pull a blanket away while shining a shotgun through it. “What do you want?” he said. I said, “is Lil’ Baby here?” Lil’ Baby was a paraplegic but an OG, as he wheels himself over and claims to remember me. For him it was nice knowing I was full of money and no dope. But, unfortunately he only had crack and he told me to get the hell out if I wasn’t spending any cash. I was out of luck so I tried fixing myself up with a rinse… or twenty of them.
A rinse is where you take the cotton you used to fill the spoon with heroin and suck it (the resin) up with a syringe. You take the cotton without heroin [but with resin in it from old heroin] and add water trying to suck up the left over resin for a chance at a high. I sure as hell didn’t feel anything, as I was almost 20 hours without dope. So, I did another rinse, and another, until there was only a small amount of cotton left. After about twenty rinses I started to feel hot and cold at the same time. Something was clearly wrong and I checked my temperature, it was 104.7 degrees Fahrenheit. I was starting to crawl in my skin so I had my mom rush me to the hospital an hour later while the symptoms still persisted. I was covered in 5 blankets while I was coming from underneath a covered heater fortress (not good for the temperature rise but I felt cold!). I said this, “Mom I have the flu let’s go to St. Mary’s.” She believed me and we immediately hopped in the car and I was off to try and get clean. Treatment or not I was going to do whatever it took to get this pain to go away! I was a fiend scrapping the floor for specks of dust, to be called nothing but a dope sick junkie.
I could feel the poison coursing through my veins as another poison tried to rid itself of me, and I of it. The cotton had created an allergic reaction from doing too many rinses and I had contracted an infection. I wasn’t just dope sick now, I was infected like the sickly being I was. The fever I contracted was worse than any sexually transmitted or auto-deficient disease. My skin was turning red and I felt like I was on fire, while sitting on a pallet of ice. The blankets didn’t do anything but raise the temperature, while the underground fortress I built smelled like fire from the electric heater.
On the way to the hospital my mom turned on her emergency blinkers and sped through every turn, light, person, and obstacle. “Son, I’ll get you there fast just hold on! I swear I won’t let my baby down!” as she pleaded for me to hold on. But, in fact it was I who let her down, until she had yet to find out the real truth. I wasn’t with the flu, I was just famished with another ill-membered disease: “Addiction.”
The car ride couldn’t be longer. We were only 4 ½ miles away from the nearest emergency room. We get there and I’m immediately hauled in like a mule to his grool. Strapped to monitors they ask, “Can I have your insurance card son?” I deployed a straight answer, “Yes mam, I’m really sick… please just help me!” I was now, “Down with the sickness, and simply disturbed.”
