Focus. It’s a hot commodity that’s hard to come by these days! When I sit down to write this article, I have to really force myself to sit down and…Oh, look it’s raining! Oops, sorry. As I was saying, I have to force myself to sit down and focus! It sounds like some bad American Pie skit, “Focus, focus, focus!”
On average, a human being’s attention span lasts about 8 seconds, can you believe that? Eight Seconds! And it’s gotten worse as we introduce more stimulation through electronic mobile devices and social media. Our brain’s become far too accustomed to switching from one topic to another; we’re constantly derailed by outside stimuli. Life has become one big Facebook newsfeed that quickly jumps from some sort of political garbage to a video of a homeless man getting a make-over (have you seen that one? It’s really good! Can you say, “Swagger!”)
Now imagine adding the fact that you’re in early addiction recovery, which already supplies its own set of handicaps on our attention abilities… Need I say more? Well, if you’re focused I will.
Your brain’s still adjusting to life without your toxin of choice and you feel like you’re constantly floating through fog in your mind. Your level of mental functioning isn’t at 100% “yet.” So, combined with society’s attention restrictions that’ve been inherently placed on you, staying focused throughout the day seems nearly impossible! Right? I hope we’re still on the same page… ugh!
So with some careful training, experience in addiction recovery, and frustration, here’s my focused tips and techniques to help you off of the struggle bus and into FOCUSLAND:
Tips and techniques that can help to get you back on the focus train:
- Exit Out of All Social Media Outlets
Yes, I really just said that. Facebook, Twitter, Instragram, etc… They’re all miraculous outlets that allow you to stay current with old friends, family members, and that weird guy that posts shirtless pictures of himself with his dogs who insists he sat across from you in Macro-Economics.
What social media is NOT good for is allowing you to focus! It’s so easy to get sucked into the newsfeed vortex, so nip that issue in the butt and close all your social media apps. Humor me if you don’t believe (yet!).
If you really have the twitch (twitter itch), set up a schedule for yourself to check your social media outlets throughout the day and stick to it. That will allow you to protect yourself from getting lost in reading people’s statuses and let you focus on the task at hand throughout the day.
- Put on Some Tunes
Surprisingly, studies have shown that if you put on music while you are trying to focus on a simple task, your attention deficit should decrease. By playing music that you enjoy, while you’re trying accomplish something that would normally feel menial and boring, your mind will feel that the task is actually fun (or at least more fun) because it’s being associated with your favorite tunes. The music you are playing will stimulate your mind and make you feel happy, which in turn alleviates the burden of the task at hand, enabling you to get ‘er done.
No, you don’t have to sit crossed-legged and “ohm” until you are floating 6-inches above the ground. But it has been proven that if you take 30 seconds to a minute to focus on your breath going in and out of your body before attempting to complete a task, you are more likely to be able to accomplish that task with little to no mental disruption.
Take less than a minute to bring yourself into the moment, quiet your mind, and then knock out whatever it is you need to do! There’s no better tool than mindfulness.
