I was recently asked a question about habits or strategies in recovery. The question was this: “What are your 3 best regular habits or strategies that help you regain clarity and stay sober?” After thinking about it for a while I didn’t have just a small little answer for this interview. I had my own peace and clarity come to mind and a supernova of an answer came out! Here it is…
My favorite thing and habit or strategy for recovery is working towards a better future with my wife Patricia. She’s been my catalyst into actually changing versus being just sober. We’ve gone through a long distance relationship in the Philippines, to successfully being married for 6-months (today)!
She’s my favorite habit/strategy/and love of my life, there’s no doubt about that! With her I want to be the best I can be and that means a whole lifestyle change, not just sobriety! It’s funny that now, today, being 5.5 years clean it’s not about just a “better recovery” it’s about a better life all together. It’s about being the best person you can be so you’re able to give back to the humanity you’ve been so generously brought into.
I think that people who are “searching” and ask the question, “Why am I here? What is the real question for my life” are stuck in asking a selfish question. This has also been the overall, number one, debated question over time that so many people struggle with. But you see that the nature of struggle comes from living a selfish existence and hiding behind that very same question itself.
We must be better in an all around atmosphere around us, not just for recovery, but so we can give back to makes this world the best place it can be. And for those who are stuck asking “Why me?” instead ask the question “How can I?” and once you have that answer, run with it as fast as you can before you find yourself contemplating anymore. People don’t chase dreams who’re achieving them; they are making their dreams and the dreams are chasing them!
So I ask you, just for today, how are you making your dreams chase you? How are you living a selfless existence and meaningful one, too? Is there something that sticks out in your day to day that makes you feel like you’re going above and beyond in your recovery? Because we all know that it doesn’t take one little thing, or even one big thing to gain a better sense of a better recovery. It takes a combination of a bunch of little things and bunch of big things for yourself, but mostly for others to make this world a better place for the both of you.
There may be many different routes you want to take to achieving this and there may be not one choice or answer to solve it all but the number one thing that matters is that you’re doing, instead of sitting around asking, “Why?” So don’t sit back and ask yourself… “Why me?” Get out there and answer the question… “How can I?”
